Andre and Joanna live and work in central China, teaching at a university and volunteering at an orphanage.  In March 2013, they met a 7 week old baby boy that changed their lives.  They felt an immediate connection and love for this sweet baby boy, and the staff asked Andre to name him.  Andre chose the name Joshua, which we later found out was the name he was given just the day before by the manager of the orphanage. :)

Andre and Joanna began fostering Joshua part-time (as much as the orphanage would allow) in April 2013.  Whenever Joshua was not able to go home with them, they would visit him at the orphanage!  This year they were able to begin fostering him full-time.  He is now 18 months old, almost 19 months old - and has grown so much!  Andre and Joanna can't imagine life without Joshua, and already look to him as their son.  They have begun the adoption process, but still have a ways to go.  According to Chinese regulations both parents must be 30 years old to adopt a child from China.  Andre fulfills this requirement, but Joanna is 29.  They can officially submit their application in China in January 2015, when Joanna turns 30 (Joshua will turn 2 that month).  They have completed their home study and are now working on what they need to do with their agency on the U.S. side.  They are hoping that the adoption will be complete by next spring/summer, 2015.

Please pray for them as they continue to care for and love Joshua throughout this adoption journey!  Adoption is not an easy thing -- there are many expenses and fees in America and China.  Please help them financially if you can!  Also, feel free to share this page with family and friends!  Share their story and join others in praying for this family!

We have exciting news to share! Tomorrow, Thursday, January 28th, we will be coming “home”!

The last couple months have been very busy with finishing the school semester, saying goodbye to friends, and working on very important final steps for Joshua’s adoption. We spent the last couple weeks in Xi’an and Guangzhou getting all of the necessary paperwork and Joshua’s passport ready. Today we received Joshua’s immigration visa for the US! We are happy to share that he will become an American citizen upon entry to the US.

Thank you for your prayers, encouragement and support throughout this time! Please continue to pray for us as we travel and adjust to being back. As you can imagine we are tired at this point, but full of joy! God has been faithful to us and we are now bringing home Joshua Paul Abrantes!!!

With gratitude and excitement,
Andre, Joanna, and Joshua Abrantes

“Praise the Lord, all you nations! Exalt Him, all you peoples! For His merciful kindness is great toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord!”
Psalm 117

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! We had a good Christmas here in Hanzhong, and are thankful to God for bringing us through many important steps in Joshua's adoption the last month or so.

December 15: I-800 approval
December 20: Applied for Joshua's immigration visa
December 30: Article 5 was issued by US Consulate

We have attached a diagram with a clearer explanation of the process and where we are at now. We now wait for travel approval. Then we can book appointments in Xi'an and Guangzhou and head to the States soon after. Thank you for your continued prayers and encouragement!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!! We are so very grateful for significant progress with Joshua’s adoption!

On November 9th we received word that our agency had received our LOA (Letter of Acceptance). This is official approval from the CCCWA to adopt Joshua specifically. As soon as we received this, we applied to the USCIS for the I-800, a petition to classify Joshua as an immediate relative. Now we wait to hear from the USCIS (we heard this usually takes 3-4 weeks for approval). Then we can get Joshua’s visa information to the consulate in Guangzhou, await approval for his immigrant visa, and then await travel approval! In order to complete Joshua’s adoption, we need to return to the States for about a year. We need to complete Joshua’s adoption according to state laws in California, and take care of many documents and home studies while there. So, we have talked with the university, and they are working with us to help us leave Hanzhong when we finish teaching this fall term.

Thank you for your continued prayers, encouragement, and support! We are grateful for you!!!
Happy Thanksgiving!!!

We are happy to share some good news! We got news yesterday that Joshua’s file has finally been signed and sent to Beijing! It should be registered in the next couple of weeks, and then we wait for our LOA (Letter of Acceptance).

We know that many of you know how long we have been waiting to complete this process and how anxious we are to bring Joshua home to California and Portugal! We appreciate your continued prayers throughout this process. If you would like to read more details about what has been happening the last few months, and see how we have been reminded that God and God alone is the one in control throughout this process, then please read our story below.
____________________________________________________________

Joshua’s file was sent to Xi’an in May, to be signed and sent to Beijing. About a month ago we found out that his file would be stuck in Xi’an for some time, because of some private issues going on in the offices there (which we are unable to share at this point in time). The person that needed to sign it was out of the office and would not be back for a while. When we heard this news, we were devastated. Not knowing how long his file could be in Xi’an, we called out for help - in prayer. We shared with friends to pray, called friends at the orphanage here in Hanzhong and even friends in Xi’an and asked them to help. However, after several attempts no one could get his file out of Xi’an — which made us feel even more sad, confused, and frustrated.

A couple weeks ago, Andre was tutoring a friend here in Hanzhong. She had asked Andre how the adoption process was going. He shared that we were a bit sad right now because Joshua’s file seems to be stuck in Xi’an. Andre asked her if she knew anyone that could help. A week or two went by with no news from the orphanage or our friend, we just kept hearing from everyone “to wait”. Last week, as Andre was tutoring our friend, she received a phone call from her friend in Xi’an. She let us know that her friend is a deputy in the Civil Affairs office in Xi’an and would try his best to help, but no guarantee. Again, we were told to wait and “be patient”. At the beginning of this week we were both feeling anxious and Joanna reminded us that we have to keep trying, we have to keep messaging people to know what’s going on. On Tuesday, September 8, Andre messaged our friend to see if she had heard any news. We received a message back letting us know that Joshua’s file had been located, signed, and would be sent to Beijing!!!

Though we were excited to hear this news, we were curious to confirm with the orphanage whether this information was in fact true and in the system. Our friends at the orphanage went online to check and messaged Andre on his phone. The messages wrote, “The good news, Andre. Material has signed, uploaded to online within two weeks. Thanks be to God! Hallelujah!” (you can see the message in the photo)

Throughout this process we have had times where we felt things were impossible. Even from the beginning when we first met Joshua - beginning to foster him part-time, then not being able to foster him and not even being allowed to visit him for a while, and then fostering him full-time since April 2014. During each of these highs and lows, it was not easy and the way we thought things never turned out the way we thought they would. God is above all and is in all things! He knows Joshua’s story and had it planned from the beginning. Please continue to pray for us! As we know, we are not finished, we are getting close to the end and are praying and hoping we can be home in California for Christmas … but, keep praying! We have been told that things should go smoothly from here, but we have heard that before, so please remember us in your prayers. Pray for endurance, strength, patience, and wisdom in these final days!
