Being a Pancreatic Cancer Survivor, as Tom has been for the past 4 1/2 years is truly an oxymoron. The first step was surgical to remove traces of the cancer and parts or all of the organs that the cancer cells had attached to. Next was 6 months of Chemotherapy. Aided by alternative and Naturopathic support, the next 3 years Tom was cancer free, and he vowed to live life with passion, energy, including dancing several days a week and being an active member of his community. He and his wife Mindy, have gained a wealth of knowledge on what supports the body and immune system dealing with the onslaught of cancer, chemotherapy and challenging drugs.  Most everything Tom has chosen in his survival with cancer has been naturopathic and alternative including: IV therapy (high dose Vitamin C, Mistletoe, and immune supports), more than 50 daily supplements, Energy Medicine (Tom trained and after 3 years of study, became a Certified Eden Energy Medicine Practitioner) and recently, Hyperthermia treatments, available only in British Columbia have been added to his survival regime.  All of this comes out of Tom's pocket because our medical system will not support any of it with the exception of chemotherapy.  If Tom had used Chemotherapy alone, he would no longer be alive and we would not be asking for your support.
So now a call, to help this family as Tom seeks out effective, alternative treatment to Pancreatic Cancer.  These alternative treatments are not covered by insurance, but Tom is living proof that they work. Next week he is going back to British Colombia for his second round of intensive hyperthermia treatment and I am hoping that our town, of which Tom has been a member of for decades can help him with this expense. His last round of hyperthermia treatment was a success, his tumors shrank!  This is a call for those of us who believe in the power of holistic treatment, who believe that local, organic food can nourish and heal the body and soul, a call for us, as a community to help Tom for all the years he has volunteered as a board member of too many organizations to list, as a provider of local food and purveyor of permaculture knowledge.  I am asking our little mountain town to help this man with his battle against cancer.
We are eternally grateful for donations of any size, however, for donations over $110, Tom is offering an Energy Medicine session.  For larger donations from people afar, Mindy and Tom would like to open their home for an evening stay in Durango, where you can partake in a wonderful organic dinner, an energy session or a massage (provided by Mindy who has 30 years of experience in therapeutic massage). Thank you for your donation.

I am so glad that we are able to spend time in the garden together. I am also happy that we are able to provide organic, local produce to support your journey of healing. I know that the garden nourishes not only your body but also your soul. I want to thank you for all the time you have spent healing and helping others through the garden.

Much Love,
Jamie

Certainly not the news that we were hoping for. Here is an update from Tom regarding his latest PET scan.

The results of last weeks PET/CT Scan were not at all what we had expected. The labs done in early August showed that the cancer marker had jumped from 48 (less than 35 is considered normal) to 317. Given that I had just come back from the extreme hyperthermia treatments, we figured that the higher cancer marker meant that we had destroyed a lot of tumor cells. (The cancer marker measures the amount of tumor protein in the blood. So a high reading could be the result of a lot of dead tumor cells -- or it could be showing that the tumors had grown.)

Instead, the scan showed that the three small tumors (which in the June CT Scan had all been reduced in size from the February Scan to about 7mm in diameter) were all "hyperactive" metabolically, and two to them were now about 16mm in diameter (compared to about 13mm in February.) My two MD oncologists disagree about what the results mean. The doctor here in Durango believes that the scan could be showing a "pseudo-progression" that is the result of the two immunotherapy IVs that I have had, and that we should continue with the immunotherapy and have another scan in 2-3 months. The doctor in Seattle who recommended the immunotherapy thought that I should resume the Chemo treatments and, since the tumors are now large enough, find a radiation oncologist with a Gamma Knife to attack the tumors to make it easier for the immunotherapy drug to work.

Although Tom is back in Durango, he provided me these photos of his treatment and an explanation of the process. The text below is from him!

This was the reason for this trip to Fort Langley, British Colombia: they call it Body Warming Therapy. It is actually VERY intense hyperthermia. I call this device "the oven". You can see that there is a barrier between my head and shoulders and the rest of me. The 'body' space is heated by infrared lamps, and the temperature feels like it is in the 120 degree range. I am 'wired' for ECG and a temperature probe in my colon is used to monitor my body temperature. It takes about an hour and a half to get my body into the fever range -- 101.3 and the heat stays on until my body temperature reaches 104.0. Today we kept me in that fever range for a little over two hours. The fever range creates protein heat shock in my body which really stimulates my immune system to destroy tumor cells.

The pictures show 'the oven' when I first got in prior to being wired and having an IV started and then the oven gets closed and the lamps get turned on. The whole process from lamps on to cooled off takes a out 4.5 hours, and it is intense!
